Story number 1: So I was tuturing a little girl yesterday who would not read and was mad that I was making her sound out words. She was giving me the glare and pretty much hated me and I was praying very hard to be able to keep my cool. We were reading a story about a magic coat. So when she finally read about magic coat I asked her what she thought it would do. She did not understand my question, but instead replied "Everyone has magic Auntie (that is what they all call us). Then she said "look" and pointed another direction as I turned my head to look she ducked under the table. Then she popped her little head out and said, "See everyone has magic." In her mind she had disappeared and reappeared. That little act just made me smile and perhaps I could say truly performed an act of magic for me because I was able to smile and continue through the battle of her not wanting to read.
Later that day I heard of some of the stories these children have truly lived through. Some of them have witnessed awful things. Things that if I wrote them down on this blog would probably make you cry. So I realized how much these children are dealing with and for a little girl to believe in magic after living through tragedy is a miracle in an of itself.
Story number 2: At playtime I finally have some constant little friends who when they see me come running. I hearing them yell "Auntie" and then come running into my arms. At times I have one on my shoulders, two in my arms, and one dragging on my legs. It is really is kind of fun to feel so loved. Yesterday another volunteer was teaching them hopscotch. The kids were so proud of themselves for being able to play the game. Then the little boy I call "monkey boy" came running up. When he gets you are done for. There is not stopping him from climbing to the top and landing on the shoulders. The only way to get him off is to lean over and make him get on someone else's shoulders because trying to pry him off of you is literally prying him off of you. It is kind of fun because he and I have a little song we made up and we walk around singing the song and swinging on the monkey bars. I won't know what to do when I get home and don't have so many children to love me so much.
Story number 3: Just to make you all laugh I thought I share with you the Trishaism that is now the joke in my room. One morning we were talking about the theme at this place which is "It's all about love" I stated "Every time I hear that it makes me think of a song...only I don't know the words to the song or even how the song goes. I know it is from a movie, but I am not sure what movie and I know I have never seen the movie." Yeah, I know that was a brilliant comment. But isn't that what I am famous for?
Sorry no pictures today, I have used up my lunch and it is time to go rake more leaves.
